What complete smart home automation includes

Complete smart home automation means one designed system, not a collection of devices that each arrive with their own app. Lighting, shading, climate, surveillance, access, intercom and the network beneath them are planned together, commissioned together, and controlled from one place. The result is a home that behaves the way you expect it to, without anyone having to manage it.

How we work

Most clients come to us with an outcome in mind rather than a hardware list, and that is the right way round. Our work begins with understanding how you use the property: which rooms matter, what should happen on its own, and what you would rather never think about again. We then specify the systems that deliver it.

You are not asked to choose between protocols or brands. That is our responsibility, and it is where the difference between a home that works and one that frustrates is decided. We run multiple homes, each with its own dashboard and its own automation set. Nothing is copied from one property to the next.

Network

It starts with the network

Automation is only as reliable as the network underneath it, and this is where most smart homes quietly fail. Before anything else is specified, we design the network: structured cabling, access point placement measured against the building rather than guessed, separated segments so that cameras and automation are not competing with household traffic, and PoE where it belongs. We build on Ubiquiti UniFi, Aruba and TP-Link Omada.

A home that drops its connection is not a smart home.

Lighting

Wired and retrofit control across the property, from full circuits down to individual fixtures, specified to the wiring the building actually has.

Shutters and curtains

Motorised shading brought into scenes and schedules, responding to time, sun and occupancy rather than a remote left in a drawer.

Air conditioning integration and zone control, working with the units already installed wherever the protocol allows it.

Surveillance

Cameras positioned for coverage rather than count, with local recording and retention suited to the property.

Access and intercom

Capability

What these homes actually do

The clearest way to explain a complete installation is to describe what one does. The following are drawn from systems we operate, with names and locations removed.

  • A door that verifies twice. The camera outside the building recognises a face, then waits for the intercom camera to confirm the same person before the lock releases. A photograph held up to one lens opens nothing.
  • Arrival that begins before you do. Crossing a geofence some distance from home prompts the house to start cooling and to announce the arrival to the family phones and the living room television.
  • Presence rather than motion. Zone sensors confirm a room is genuinely empty, and remain confirmed for a set period, before anything switches off. Lights do not leave you sitting in the dark.
  • A tag by the bed. One tap on an NFC tag closes down the whole floor for the night.
  • Water noticed early. Leak sensors alert several people at once, before a small problem becomes a structural one.
  • A house that looks lived in. Exterior lighting follows sunset and occupancy rather than a fixed timer.
  • A record of the front door. Every entry is logged with who and when, and kept as a searchable history.

Voice

Talking to your home

Voice control runs on hardware inside the property. Speech recognition and the spoken reply are processed locally, so the wake word and everything said after it stay in the house rather than being sent to a third party by default.

Whether the language model behind it also runs locally, or calls a cloud service for greater capability, is a decision made per client rather than fixed by us. Where privacy is the priority, the entire chain can run on your own hardware. Where capability matters more, a cloud model can be used. We explain the trade-off and let you choose.

Intelligence

Where AI fits

The useful application of AI in a home is not a voice on a speaker. It is interpretation.

A camera that detects motion tells you something moved. A camera with vision analysis tells you that a delivery has been left at the door, or that someone is waiting at the gate, with a written description and the image attached. Events accumulate into a history you can search in plain language rather than a folder of clips to scroll through.

Beyond vision, language models can drive the automation logic itself, handling the situations a fixed rule performs badly. We have built on OpenAI, Anthropic and locally hosted models through Ollama.

This is the deepest layer of a project and it carries a cost to match. It is optional, and worth discussing on its own merits rather than assumed into a scope.

Reliability

Built to keep running

Reliability is designed, not hoped for. The system watches its own devices: when an integration drops a unit, it is detected within minutes and recovered automatically, usually before anyone in the house notices.

The same thinking applies to connectivity. Lighting, shading, climate, scenes, presence, local recording and door control run on hardware in the home and continue through an internet outage. Remote access needs a connection, and so does a cloud based AI model, though a locally hosted one does not.

Losing the internet should cost you convenience, not control.

One place to control everything

A home running six apps is not integrated. Every subsystem is brought into a single interface, including equipment installed long before we arrived. One app, one set of scenes, and something the whole household can use rather than one person in the family understanding it.

The dashboard

Each home gets its own dashboard, laid out around the property rather than around the equipment: a view per room, the cameras where you expect them, the air conditioning grouped the way you actually use it, shutters, lighting scenes, entry history and network status in one place. It is built for the home and revised as the home changes. No two are alike.

We are not tied to a single vendor. Part of complete smart home automation is recognising what a property already has and building on it rather than replacing it. Where a home is new, we specify from the ground up.

Process

How a complete project runs

  1. Consultation. A paid session to understand the property and what you want the home to do. This comes before any visit.
  2. Site assessment. On site review of wiring, structure, existing equipment and network conditions.
  3. Design and specification. The system is designed as a whole and the hardware chosen to suit it, not the reverse.
  4. Infrastructure. Cabling, containment and network build. On new builds this runs alongside construction; in occupied homes we work to what the property allows.
  5. Installation. Devices, panels, cameras and control hardware fitted and terminated.
  6. Commissioning. Every subsystem integrated, automations written and tested against how the home is actually used.
  7. Handover and support. The household is shown how to use the system. Support is included for the first year and renewed annually thereafter.

Scope

What shapes a complete project

No two homes are specified the same way. Scope is shaped by whether the property is a villa or an apartment, whether it is under construction or already lived in, how many lighting circuits are involved and whether a neutral wire is present at the switch points, the type of shutter motors fitted, the coverage a camera layout genuinely needs rather than a device count, the air conditioning brand and whether its protocol can be integrated, whether the intercom is analogue or digital, how much of what is already installed is worth keeping, and how deep you want the AI and voice layer to go. These are the questions we work through at consultation, before anything is quoted.

Common questions

Not always. Retrofit modules can sit behind existing switches where there is a neutral wire and room in the back box, and wireless devices cover much of the rest. Where a property is under construction, wiring for control from the start gives a cleaner and more capable result. We establish which applies at the assessment.

Yes, for everything that matters day to day. Lighting, shading, climate, scenes, presence and local recording run on hardware in the home and continue without a connection. Remote access from outside the property pauses until the connection returns, as does a cloud based AI model. A locally hosted model keeps working.

Usually. Cameras, intercoms, air conditioning and existing smart devices can often be brought into the system rather than replaced, provided the hardware exposes a usable protocol. Establishing what can be kept is part of the assessment and frequently changes the shape of the project.

Speech recognition and the spoken reply are processed on hardware in your home rather than a manufacturer server. Whether the language model behind it runs locally or in the cloud is your decision, and we will explain what each choice means before you make it.

That is the point of the work. Devices from different manufacturers are brought into one control layer, so the household uses a single interface rather than one app per subsystem.

Earlier is better. Being involved before first fix means cabling, containment and switch points are placed correctly the first time. We also work in completed and occupied homes, designing around what the property allows.

No. The system is complete and fully automated without them. AI adds interpretation rather than control, it is the most demanding layer of a project, and it is discussed separately.

The household is trained on the system, and support is included for the first year and renewed annually after that. Support covers the installation as a whole rather than individual devices.
